The Actuality of Abiding in Christ

The disciple John wrote “By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Saviour of the world. Whoever confesses Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God” (1 John 4:13-15).
From the moment you surrendered your life to Jesus by faith, you entered into Christ. You now abide in Him, and He in you. How do you know? Because He sent His Spirit into your spirit to walk with and guide your spirit.  God didn’t just hand you a manual like a car manual, now figure out abiding. He sent Himself to teach you what abiding is. Christianity is the only faith you don’t need just the person’s teaching, you need the Person.
Abiding is the actuality of being in Christ. “Whoever confesses Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in Him and he in God.”  God creates reality and reality is only what God says is real, so when He says you are in Me and I in you He means you are actually in Him.  It’s not just our position, but actually true. It is the actual reality of who you are, right now. You reign with Him right now. You are in Him. You don’t have to hope its true, wish it were true, try to make it true, because it is actually true.
You are resting in the Father right now. You have ceased from all your work. You are in the Sabbath rest of Christ. There is no more labour you must do for your salvation. God is at peace with you.  There is zero rebellion in your heart, in the new spirit God has given you at your new birth. You now have the mind of Christ.  You long to follow the will of God.  He sent his Spirit to teach you His ways, so you can experience what you are abiding by already.
Feelings are your beliefs being exposed.
Your spirit is always abiding, even if you don’t know it.  This is the actual reality of abiding. You are in Christ and He is in you. This is where your spirit always dwells. But the experience of this abiding means your soul and body also need to abide.  If your soul does not abide, you will feel anxious, fear or worry. You body will respond to what your soul believes.
Fear and worry are an indication your soul is not at rest.  Should you fear as a child of God?  Perfect love casts out fear.  Should you worry? You are commanded to not worry because God is control of all things. You exist in Him and He is in you.  According to your faith, you will either have anxiety, fear and worry or they will leave. If they don’t leave, you have a faith problem, not an anxiety problem.  The only cure is to know and magnify God, not to say you know God, but to actually know Him and rest your full trust in Him, for no person who knows God intimately has fear, worry and stress of the world.  A person who knows and trusts God abides in Him.
What we think about is central to abiding in Christ.  We must abide in the Word of God, learning from Him. When you let the world stuff into the subconscious part of your soul and it’s hard to get free of it.  Jesus said, “If you abide in My Word, you are My disciple indeed and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free.”  What you put into your mind is extremely important.  If ungodly or earthly information moves into the subconscious it will now take on a life of its own, doing what you do not want to do.  It thinks for you without your permission. Before you have a conscious thought, your soul is already moving on what has been stored in the subconscious.
The experience of abiding is based on believing truth. You always will live what you believe. If you do not believe that God is sovereign over all life, or that He is able to provide for your needs, you will struggle. Feelings are your beliefs being exposed, privately and publically. What you really believe shows through in your behaviour.  You can hide the lack of faith in your soul only for a little while.  If you have fear, you know you haven’t conquered it.  If you are putting too much on yourself, trying to control or manage your life. The solution is to listen to and know God.  Be still and know that He is God.  He is in charge.  You are secure in Him. Magnify the Lord and listen to the Spirit’s promptings.
